Bullying remains a central focus for most schools these days. There are still reports about various incidents of bullying in high school, despite our efforts to eliminate bullying. Research reveals that the longer an individual/student is bullied, the impact on his or her life can leave scars, either physical or psychological. Typical behavior for those who have had this experience is they become withdrawn and apprehensive. It is also known that they could suffer from various conditions including headaches, stomach issues, or panic attacks. These conditions could also cause their school performance to drop, as their ability to focus decreases. Absence from school could also be an outcome of these conditions.
Most studies indicate episodes of bullying in high school happen in the presence of peer witnesses. It has also been proven that peers will generally not intervene. There have been reports of peers that did intervene on behalf of the victim, either verbally or physically, and studies showed the bullies most often stopped.
How Do We Train Peers to Intervene and Prevent Bullying in High School
One method of prevention is to rally the students around the idea of stepping up and supporting their peers who are victims of bullying. Students can be given the tools to understand they “can” make a difference. If we give them these tools, they will be better equipped to assist their peers. We must also give our students a voice and teach them how to speak up against this violence. The school staff must also make sure the students know they have support.
As we continue to focus on stopping the bullying as it occurs, then it goes to follow, the bullies will understand that their actions are no longer tolerated, and our goal is to put a stop to these actions. This would be an amazing accomplishment for our students and schools.
