When you look into a high school, you will see such a mix of students. You will see shy kids, popular kids, artistic kids and every other kind of student you can imagine. It's hard to truly put labels on our youth, because we can see past those stereotypes, to their potential and their future. We have been in their shoes. For a fellow student, however, it’s a little harder not to see labels. Bullying in High School has hit an all-time high and whether we want to call it an epidemic, I don’t know, but we can all agree that it has become a toxic virus in our schools.
When you consider that a student who is bullied, is twice as likely to consider suicide if they have been bullied, it makes the idea of bullying in high school feel huge. As of 2016, it is averaged that almost 1 out of 5 students is being bullied. What are we doing to actively change and lower these numbers? Of these students who reported being bullied, they said it happened once or twice a month. There are things we can do to stand with our youth and encourage them to rise above this epidemic. It seems like a no brainer to decide we all want better for our youth. They deserve a healthy and thriving school environment. A school assembly with the right speaker can change the dynamic of school culture.
